I have a habit of reading reviews first even if it's a series I've read through. That being said I went in skeptical I was going to like this one. Maddie was very unlikable in the last book and I want sure that was going to change. After reading a couple of 2-3 star reviews I decided the reviewer 1. Didn't read the entire book or 2. Wants all characters to be perfect and exactly the same. Maddie has a loud aggressive personality ( we all have one friend like this) and her insecurities shine through. She is insecure about her weight and makes jokes at her own expense. She was freed and mere days later her sister with a disability was kidnapped. Most of the girls adapted fairly quickly but not everyone would. So Maddie is realistic. She admits to bring lazy and uninterested in trying but comes around. I ended up liking her and Hassen. I think it's unfair to give a writer few stars even though you loved the book but hated the main character. Written for mature readers only (18+ years old) due to subject matter that may be a trigger or offensive to some including adult language, steamy intimate scenes and violence such as kidnapping / abduction, human trafficking, fighting with some to the death, etc.I do not consider these stories to be stand-alone. It is an evolving story universe, that features all of the previous characters, with overlapping / consecutive timelines. It not read in series order, there will be many spoilers and reader satisfaction will be less.There are a couple of grammatical issues in this story, especially when compared to previous one, but still nothing egregious enough to warrant a lower rating.Maddie is bored, as in BORED out of her mind. She is not fitting in with the other humans or members of the sa-khui. Maddie has the brilliant idea to learn how to contribute and believes learning to hunt will fix everything.Hassen kidnapped her sister (in a previous story) but Maddie feels like he is one of the only ones there that could possibly understand her.Hassen needs to focus on hunting so he can try and get back in the good graces of his tribe and get his exile lifted. Then he sees the unmated yellow haired sister, Mah-ddie, out by herself trying to hunt. He can’t leave her to die, especially when he sees that she is being stalked …Before he knows it, Hassen has agreed to teach her to hunt. Then a misunderstanding leads to a conversation about “mating” and words turn to deeds pretty quickly.
