This one was a really slow starter for me. Enemies to lovers is not one of my favorite tropes, and I had a hard time connecting with the story and the characters at first. The bi-awakening portion also dragged on a bit too long for me/was over-justified as well. But! May Archer is one of my favorite authors for a reason, and eventually my persistence paid off. The book didn't really get good for me until around the 50% mark, and the overuse of the "Loafers" nickname in the beginning very much impeded my progress through that 50%.I did enjoy the book, and I would say that the back 50% has that May Archer charm I love so much (a combination of kindness, fun, and eccentric secondary characters), but the struggle to get into it combined with a bit of a convenient ending left a few potholes in an otherwise lovely story. If you enjoy enemies to lovers, bi-awakening, small town hijinks, and pirate treasure, you'll love this one. If you find yourself struggling a bit as I did, keep going. It's worth it in the end.This is the first book in a spin-off series from the Love in O'Leary series, and while you definitely don't have to read the previous series in order to enjoy this one, it's a great series that I would recommend to anyone. Not only am I from small towns, I'm also a fan of the O'Leary series with its improbably intensely goofy-neighborly/nosy vibe. This series has ties to that one as it's where Mason's from. You don't have to have read it to start this series. It is a fantasy in that Mason's medical practice involves nothing as silly as insurance and that kind of dull nonsense, and I was 69% in when I realized it, so that worked quite well, really. :)While there are similarities, Whispering Key feels more like what we fans of the Keys call "island time." Residents are small-town familiar with each other and are storm-aware and make sure everyone's safe. It's just a thing you do. Happens on the Hawaiian islands, too. The author's done a really fine job of conveying this interconnectedness, and this Floridian appreciates it.Fenn has issues, Mason has issues, these issues conflict - and it felt organic to me, this attraction versus their hangups. I loved how the conclusions went. I mean, sure you could maybe predict elements, but the way it's done was great!
