WOW!! On Point is another fantabulous book by the awesome Annabeth Albert! I've loved every book I've read yet I feel she just keeps getting better and better! I recommend putting her on your automatic one-click author list. Her stories are full of depth and heart, with characters who come alive on the pages of her books. You won't find cardboard stereotypes which is one of the many things I love about her books.Ben and Maddox are a dynamite couple. Their sex appeal and chemistry is palpable! I know their HEA will truly last forever because they built their relationship on a solid, 12-year friendship. They've seen each other at their best and their worst, as well as everything in between. It still takes learning to really communicate to achieve their HEA. Very realistic.I can't urge you enough to read On Point. I laughed, cried, got angry, wanted to slap some sense into both of them. I was fully invested in the story and read it in one setting. If you haven't read Annabeth Albert, what are you waiting for? This is a well done novel from start to finish. Everything missing from the second book of the series - the lack of feeling that something was at stake for the two protagonists, the lack of a compelling narrative and a forward momentum in the plot - is all here in this third novel of the series. The writing and characterization are gripping, and it's only a few near misses that keep the book from being quite remarkable (for instance, one minor detail that struck a wrong note was that a hard boiled, highly skilled, and whip smart SEAL isn't going to think of the local jungle fauna as "creepy crawly things" even as the mission goes awry; it's nothing major, especially considering the excellent story). But this is a damn good read, and the author will be hard pressed to beat it in future Out of Uniform SEAL stories.The first part of the book takes place in the jungle as Navy SEALS Ben Tovey and Maddox Horvat, both injured and in hostile territory, become separated from their unit. The 12 year friendship between the two men has become strained as they've both developed feelings for each other, and the awkward unraveling of their exceptionally close bond is told in flashbacks as they struggle to get back to their unit. The storytelling is tight and intense, with the author creating an acute sense of danger and loss that I wouldn't have expected based on what I've read by her before.When Ben and Maddox were introduced in book two, I found them completely uninteresting. But here? They become complex characters, filled with passion, fear, a deep sense of duty, honor, and friendship, and, each in unique ways, a profound sense of loss and distrust. The author beautifully anchors these feelings in a nuanced backstory that is subtly woven into the storyline. While the second part of the book starts off as more of a routine romance, the emotional dance between the two wounded warriors soon takes on its own unique qualities. We also meet a broad range of carefully drawn secondary characters that give the story greater range and depth.Oh, and the steamy scenes that keep this book squarely in the m/m romance category not only are hot, but also function as gateways into Ben and Maddox's inner lives and personal history.It feels very much like the author poured a lot of herself into this book. Every metaphor and image, some of them carefully intertwined across the narrative, feels considered and intentional. I didn't think I'd like Maddox and Ben. Turns out, I feel in love with them.P.S. Be prepared for tears, happy and otherwise. Big wet ones, rolling down your cheeks.P.P.S. I'm a bit surprised that I've been interested in a series about military men, especially as portions of the US armed services have been heinously unleashed (at the time of this review) on peaceful protests for racial justice. Everyday people have been spirited away in unmarked vans, and protesters have been confronting police armed with military weapons and vehicles using military tactics. Ben and Maddox are trained killers in the service of the U.S. government, after all, so occasionally I've reflected on the discrepancy between enjoying these books and the reality on our streets and the fascist rhetoric coming from the White House. It's this discrepancy that makes the tacit values embedded in these stories, "to serve and protect God and country," worrisome. Hopefully, the moral fiber of Ben, Maddox, Apollo and Zack aren't just creative fictions, but really represent the men and women on which our democracy relies.
